The objective
of this study was to test indicatorsand improve the assessment of groundwater
sustainabilityby using a synthetic method. An indicator system ofgroundwater
sustainability was constructed under theframework of
driver–pressure–state–impact–response, anda method for the assessment of
groundwater sustainabilitywas developed by using analytic hierarchy process
togetherwith information entropy theory. This method was used tocalculate the
weight of each indicator. And then, the sustainabilityscale was determined by
the indicator zoningmethods. The assessment results of a case study in HohhotPlain,
China, demonstrated that the method greatly reducedthe randomicity and
anthropogenic influence on the determinationof weight of indicators; and gave a
quantitativeclassification on sustainability scale which produced a rational
result on the assessment of groundwater sustainability in Hohhot Plain.
